WASECA, Minn. (WCCO) – Businesses in Waseca say they’re running into more and more problems with feral cats.
The Waseca Animal Humane Society thinks a lot of the cats started out as pets, until people couldn’t afford to take care of them.
One tavern owner in town said he sees anywhere from a dozen to 30 cats every day.
They’re digging into dumpsters for food. A lumberyard says cats have ruined thousands of dollars in product.
Police say the problem is made worse when people feed them.
“That is not necessarily illegal, (but) it causes problem because then the cats have reason to stick around,” said Waseca Police Capt. Kris Markeson.
The Humane Society plans to trap the cats then work with a non-profit group that offers low income spay and neuter services.
They have farm homes lined up for them to get them out of the city.
